Important: There are TWO parts to the midterm excercise. For full marks you must both submit something in Blackboard and be in class for the discussion.
If you only do one or the other, you will only get 5 marks. If you do both, you will get 15 marks.
STEP ONE
Choose ONE of these exercises to complete
As an exercise in finding unexpected potential in a piece of media, make (or describe in detail) a remix of some media that you think a fair number of people in class would recognize and that you would be interested in adding your own twist to or that you would like to repurpose to make make your own point with it (this could become your final remix project eventually, if you are happy with how it goes)
As an exercise in finding unexpected potential in a piece of media, make (or describe in detail) a remix of some media made by you (it could be something you shared in the Introductory exercise)
As an exercise in finding unexpected potential in a piece of media, make (or describe in detail) a remix of some media shared by one of your colleagues in the Introductory exercise (I've also put up a few things I created here so that you don't feel like I have nothing to lose)
Identify a TikTok creator doing something interesting and ideally meaningful with appropriation (by "interesting" I mean something other than lip-syching or dancing to the song of the moment, for instance). Would you say that the TikTok has value beyond opiate slop? Does the TikTok have any of the qualities Jim has been ascribing to the avant-garde (makes you think or see differently, disrupts your unconscious consumption of it or other media, for example)
Propose something to Jim related to the ideas in the first half of the course and that you would like to a quick presentation on in the workshop
STEP TWO: POST YOUR CREATION OR DETAILED DESCRIPTION OR ANALYSIS
You should attach or link to what you are remixing or analyzing. If you are not doing an actual draft remix but instead just describing what you would do, you should explain in detail what you will do to appropriate the media and make it your own.
IMPORTANT: You should write a brief description of what you would hope your project would convey to your audience.
